Praxis Tests
For a list of Praxis exams approved by the Hawaiʻi Teacher Standards Board (HTSB), please visit the Hawaiʻi ETS website. To have your Praxis test scores sent to the HTSB, you must provide the Educational Testing Service (ETS) with the HTSB state code of 8620 and your social security number (SSN) during your score reporting request. Without including both the correct state code and your SSN, your scores will not be transmitted, and your licensure application will be delayed. ETS does not use your SSN for its own purposes.
Recognized Timeframe for Praxis Test Results
Effective January 1, 2023, the HTSB shall accept all official passing scores from HTSB-approved exams completed within five (5) years prior to the submitted application. Official passing scores from HTSB-approved exams that are older than five (5) years will be accepted on a case-by-case basis (read HTSB’s New Business Item 22-28 policy). It is essential to periodically check this page for any updates to testing requirements. All test takers are advised to confirm test dates when registering.
Enrolled in a Hawaiʻi State-Approved Teacher Education Program (SATEP)
Applicants enrolled in a SATEP must check with their preparation program to determine which test(s) they must pass PRIOR to their Student Teaching.
**NOTE: If you are completing an out-of-state teacher education program, and you did not achieve licensure in your state, you will need to complete additional testing requirements listed in HTSB’s New Business Item 21-13 policy.
Approved Praxis Tests
The HTSB accepts only the approved Praxis tests listed on the Hawai‘i ETS website. Since each state has different testing requirements for licensure, do not use the general ETS Praxis page.
If you have questions about a Praxis test, please contact your assigned licensing specialist through the Contact HTSB tab in your HTSB profile. Be sure to include the following information in your message:
- The licensing field you wish to add
- The grade span you are seeking
Consider the following when scheduling your test:
- Not all tests are offered on every testing date. Applicants should check the test schedule in advance to ensure the required exams are available and can be completed within their timeline.
- Current National Board Certified Teachers holding a current, valid, non-deficient, and unrevoked license from another state are exempt from all examinations.
- If you are applying with an out-of-state license and have to verify basic skills and content knowledge, you may use licensure tests from your home state.
- When a test is replaced, there is an overlap period during which both the soon-to-be-expired test and the new test are offered and accepted for licensure. Score reports from previously required tests may also be accepted. Check with HTSB to verify eligibility.
